In this module, we will be exploring representation in media and how it affects all of us on a daily basis. We will primarily do this through the book Indian No More, which focuses on a young woman from the Umpqua Tribe whose reservation has recently been terminated. Her family has moved to Los Angeles and she is suddenly thrust into a multicultural setting in the middle of The Civil Rights Movements.
After looking into the themes of the book and its essential questions around culture and representation, we will begin to examine our own stories --- who they leave out, who they include, and creating what we would like to see more of in the media. We will also explore informational writing of highlighting important voices that have been drowned out by more dominant forms of history.
Finally, we will present our pieces at our school art show, titled "Lift Every Voice," in homage to both the Black National Anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and philosopher Robert Ingersoll, who said "We rise by lifting others."
