The competition was initiated by the Ministry of National Education, Indonesia in 2003 (which was then called AMSO - ASEAN Mathematics and Science Olympiad) with the aim of developing primary school pupils' talent and interest in Mathematics and Science, and motivating them to develop their intellectual capacity and skills in these subjects.
To allow primary school students from various countries to develop their ability in mathematics and science to their full potential.
To create an academic atmosphere, encourage innovation, research & development and academic progress.
To create a network of cooperation in the development of teaching and learning of mathematics and science with international educational organizations.
To disseminate international cultural exchanges and strengthen the relationship between teachers and students.
In 2011, the organisers decided to hold IMSO for the first time outside Indonesia.
