What is the Midwife-Led Care?

Midwives in California are clinical healthcare providers who care for pregnant people and newborns during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum periods.

This includes the provision of preventive measures and the detection of abnormal conditions in the mother and newborn, offering referral or consultation with physician and other healthcare providers when indicated, and execution of emergency care until the need has resolved or additional assistance can be obtained.

Midwives can prescribe and/or administer medications, suture lacerations and manage a number of complications independently.  Nurse-Midwives can provide routine gynecological care including abortion care.
