Who Are We?

Illinois State University is proud to host the NCTE African American Read-In for the 6th year in a row. In 2021, the Read-In event has undergone innovation through the ever-shifting dynamics that our modern world presents. Despite the global pandemic, our team was committed to delivering an event in which students can explore texts that highlight Black voices. With each year, new voices bring exciting ideas and diverse perspectives with the hope that each Read-In can be the best one yet! This year, we're bringing the Read-In to you!

This year's team consists of four students within the ISU English program who are all committed to social justice and diverse voices. Our team has worked hard to transform the Read-In to fit our ever-changing world. Let's introduce ourselves:

Anushree R.

Hi everyone! My name is Anushree (pronounced: Uh-Noo-Shree) and I am a junior English education major here at Illinois State University! I am also a tutor and a TA on campus, and I'm the founder of South Asian Student Alliance, a student organization at ISU. This is my second year working on the Read-In! I love the outdoors, iced coffee, trying adventurous things (my most recent adventure was driving cross-country on a road trip!), and, of course, reading great books.

Tamila W.

Hello everyone, my name is Tamila! I am a junior in the English Education program at Illinois State University. In my spare time, I love going to the gym, painting, and cooking with friends. This is my first year participating in the Read-in and I am so excited to work with you all!

Abbey B.

Hi! My name is Abbey, I am a junior English Education major, and this is my second year working on the NCTE African American Read-In committee. In my free time, I love playing tennis, reading science fiction, and trying (and failing at) Pinterest recipes.

Destiny D.

Hi all, my name is Destiny! I am a fourth year English Education major at Illinois State University. This is my second year working on the read-in and I am truly grateful for the experience. I love spending time with my family and my fat cat Bella-Wella.

Dr. Morris Davis

Hello, all. My name is Dr. Morris Davis and I have the good fortune to learn alongside teacher candidates in our English Education program at ISU. This event, the NCTE African American Read-In, is always a highlight of our program's outreach efforts. We are so eager to be in community with you as we all explore this year's theme.
