Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an influential force in health and health care improvement in the US and abroad. The IHI takes the science of improvement approach to improve quality, safety, and value in health care. The science of improvement approach emphasizes innovation, rapid-cycle testing in the field, and spread. It is characterized by the combination of expert subject knowledge with improvement methods and tools. It is multidisciplinary — drawing on clinical science, systems theory, psychology, statistics, and other fields.

Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School's mission is to advance health care improvement and patient safety competencies in the next generation of health professionals worldwide.
Launched in September 2008, the IHI Open School provides students of medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, health administration, dentistry, and other allied health professions with the opportunity to learn about quality improvement and patient safety at no charge. The online, educational community features a growing catalog of online courses, extensive content and resources, and a network of local Chapters that organize events and activities on campuses around the world.
