In groups, you are going to act out the opening page of the book. You are creating a brand new opening so you do not need to simply copy the original. You need 4 characters: Yerma, Juan, Shepherd, Boy. You also need someone to be the voice offstage. Think about the following:
What will the audience see when the play opens?
How will the characters move on stage?
Costume - What will they wear?
How will the characters say their lines? Tone?
Group 1 - Anna, Maryam, Alon, Elizabeth
Group 2 - Melek, Jakub, Yewon, Alex
Group 3 - Emily, Ema, David, Jaroslaw
Group 4 - Valentina, Vencel, Jan, Robert, Alzbeta
Task 1 - 20 mins
In groups, skim through the play looking for possible extracts (around 2-3 pages). Remember that we will choose an extract that includes themes such as longing for a child, repression/patriarchal society, passion. We will make sure there are stage directions and dialogue. And lastly there will be symbolism. Remember it will not be p33-37, p50-55, or p64-69.
Task 2
Write out an example introduction for any extract you find.
Start with a broad statement or cool intro. eg Playwrights often depict characters who...
Then mention the play and where this extract takes place. eg Yerma by Federico Garcia Lorca focuses on this very concept, particularly in Act __, Scene ___
Briefly explain this scene and why it is important. eg This scene is vital as it revolves around...
Then the topic of your essay eg This scene is vital in building tension.
Lastly, techniques you will look at. eg Lorca explores this through the use of ....
Task 3
Pick out techniques from the scenes from yesterday. Write a timed PETAL.
