Call for Papers

Conference Theme: Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on Libraries

Date: Thursday, 22 August, 2019

Venue: Ionian University, 72 Ioannou Theotoki Str., 49100 Corfu, Greece

Organisers: IFLA Knowledge Management Section & IFLA Digital Humanities/Digital Scholarship Special Interest Group

Primary Contacts:

Artificial intelligence (AI) creates new possibilities for humans to leverage machines to complete complex tasks -- sometimes tedious, repetitive, and even dangerous -- with much-improved accuracy and speed. Its potential in advancing societies and benefiting lives seems only subject to the limits of the imagination, but, at the same time, AI introduces ethical and socioeconomic concerns. AI generally envisions more technology and fewer people. It is reasonable to predict that AI will mainstream in several critical areas, including information services soon; therefore, libraries must pay attention to its impact.

This one-day satellite conference will be a showcase and discussion forum for how AI implementations in libraries can be used successfully to improve and manage library processes in libraries and organisations. In addition, the conference intends to bring together practitioners and experts from a wide-variety of institutions to share knowledge and demonstrate AI research, especially to discuss areas of human/computer interaction or the intersection of "man and machine." This discussion is meant to relate to the IFLA 2019 WLIC theme of "Libraries: Dialogue for Change."

Authors are invited to submit proposals for the satellite conference that illustrate research projects and results, but, more importantly, tell a story of how the implementation changed human roles, activities, and process events. The papers selected in this session should provide a series of vibrant examples of AI as it applies to information services in organisations, including contributions and potentials to librarianship.

Possible topics for proposals may include, but are not limited to:

      • Predictive analytics
      • Image scanning/interpretation
      • Recommender systems
      • Text generation/analytics
      • Decision management
      • Smart fulfillment/delivery system
      • Machine learning
      • Deep learning
      • Natural language processing
      • Process optimisation/automation
      • Biometrics
      • Intelligent discovery system
      • Automated classification/tagging
      • Robotics
      • Crowdsourcing
      • Virtual agents
      • Internet of things (IoT)

Proposals should include:

      • An abstract of paper of approximately 500 words
      • A summary of the author(s) details (name, institution, position) and brief biographical statement of no more than 50 words.

Proposals should be submitted electronically to Elizabeth Turner (lizturner0304@gmail.com) with a copy to Sylvia Piggott (seapiggott@gmail.com) no later than 11 March, 2019 and indicate "KM Satellite Proposal" in the subject line.

Proposals will be reviewed by the members of the IFLA KM Satellite Conference Organising Committee. Selection will be based on proposal content and fit to the conference theme.

Selected presenters will be notified by 28 March, 2019.

The deadline for the final version of full papers accepted for the session is 14 May, 2019. Papers should be original work in English (or in one of the official IFLA languages, with an English translation attached) not published elsewhere. They should be no longer than 15 double-spaced pages using a standard 12-point font. The language of the Satellite Meeting will be English.

Presenters will have 20 minutes in the programme session to deliver their papers, and time will be allowed for an open forum to allow audience interaction. Authors must present their papers at the IFLA KM Satellite Conference for the paper to be published on the IFLA website. Use of PowerPoint or other visuals is encouraged. In accordance with IFLA’s Open Access Statement, all papers must be made available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Unported (CC BY 4.0) license.

All expenses are the responsibility of the authors/presenters; no financial support can be provided by IFLA, the IFLA KM Section, or the IFLA DH/DS Special Interest Group to assist prospective authors. Abstracts should only be submitted on the understanding that the expenses of the attending the Corfu Satellite Conference and the WLIC Athens conference (including travel, expenses and conference fee) will be the responsibility of the authors(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers. At least one author will be expected to attend conference to deliver the paper. Check with your national professional association(s) to see if they funding to help you. Also, a small number of grants for conference attendance may be available at: http://www.ifla.org/funds-grants-awards.
