The FlorestaSC program, which has been systematically monitoring the forests of Santa Catarina for 18 years, has just published new results in the journal Forest Ecology and Management, in the article "FlorestaSC: A double-up approach to improve biodiversity monitoring in hyperdiverse forests". The study highlights how the integration between forest inventories and floristic surveys — carried out continuously over time — is fundamental to understanding the true species richness of the Atlantic Forest.
The research compared two complete sampling cycles distributed throughout the state, totaling more than 500 permanent plots. Combining structural measurements of the forests and collections of fertile plant material, FlorestaSC recorded 2,871 species of vascular plants, which corresponds to 44% of all known flora in Santa Catarina.
While the forest inventory documented 918 species of trees and shrubs, the floristic surveys added 2,679 species, including herbs, epiphytes, and climbers. Together, these approaches reveal a much more complete picture of plant diversity and demonstrate the importance of integrating different forest data collection methodologies. Furthermore, revisiting plots over the years is essential to continue detecting new species. In the second sampling cycle, 278 species that had not been previously recorded were included, demonstrating that knowledge about biodiversity grows cumulatively when monitoring is maintained continuously, reinforcing the value of long-term programs.
Evolution of the FURB Herbarium over the years, comparing the exclusive contribution of Cycles 1 and 2 of the FlorestaSC floristic surveys (blue dots and lines) with other records (black). Approximately 7% (328) of all species in FURB were collected exclusively through floristic surveys (difference between the blue and black lines). The first dashed red line indicates the beginning of Cycle 1 (2007) and the second, the end of Cycle 2 (2020).
The spectrum of life forms in our collections revealed a predominance of trees and shrubs (Number of records = 8649, or 33.0%), followed by herbs (8068, 30.8%), epiphytes (7621, 29.0%), and climbers (1903, 7.3%).
The study also highlighted the importance of taxonomic work: on average, species not identified at the time of collection took almost two years to be identified, reflecting the complexity of the process and the need for ongoing investment in the training of botanical specialists and the maintenance of scientific collections.
A large part of the collected samples was incorporated into the Dr. Roberto Miguel Klein Herbarium (FURB), which now houses 40% of its specimens originating from collections by FlorestaSC. In addition to strengthening regional botanical research, the digitization and availability of these records on open platforms, such as JABOT and speciesLink, makes the data accessible to researchers and environmental managers in Brazil and abroad.
Over nearly two decades of operation, FlorestaSC has established itself as a model for long-term monitoring, contributing to the advancement of knowledge about the forests of Santa Catarina and supporting conservation policies.

Guilherme Gritzz, a doctoral student at the University of São Paulo, and his co-authors published a study in the journal Oryx assessing the extinction risk of more than 500 tree species in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The article was titled "Assessing the extinction risk of tree species in the subtropical Atlantic Forest using multiple IUCN criteria."
Using the IUCN Red List criteria, they found that 98% of the species assessed are threatened, many with population declines exceeding 50% in recent generations. This regional assessment highlights the urgent need for updated conservation policies and localized conservation efforts.
The Atlantic Forest is a biodiversity hotspot, but only a quarter of its original coverage remains. Guilherme's work offers a crucial roadmap for the protection of the remaining trees.
