Catalyzing Spectrum Sharing via Active/Passive Coexistence

A Workshop in conjunction with IEEE ICC'24

June 9th, 2024, Denver, CO, USA

Overview

The wireless spectrum is a crucial resource for diverse applications, including mobile broadband, weather forecasting, astronomy, and space exploration. However, the growing demand for spectrum has led to congestion and conflicts between services, causing harmful interference. Additionally, out-of-band emissions from commercial systems operating close to protected radio astronomy bands are both costly to mitigate and potentially catastrophic to sensitive receivers.

Unlocking the potential of next-generation wireless systems while preserving spectrum for scientific advancements requires efficient spectrum sharing and innovative management approaches. Authorizing and operating these systems will require new and innovative techniques that can provide real-time coordination, control, and enforcement in highly dynamic environments. Furthermore, these systems must coexist with users who have stringent interference limitations.

Our workshop aims to explore the current state-of-the-art in research related to spectrum coexistence between active and passive spectrum users.  Specific topics of interest include experimental zones and sites (e.g., National Radio Quiet Zones (NRQZ), Testbeds and  Innovation Zones), advanced spectrum measurement and management techniques, spectrum and propagation measurement and models, and techniques for coordination or sharing between active and passive users, including terrestrial and airborne.
