The first piece of music in the opera contains three pieces in one: an aria for Leporello; a trio for Leporello, Giovanni, and Anna; and a trio for Leporello, Giovanni, and the Commendatore. There’s also a little parlando sequence (connective tissue music) in between the two trios – the section in which Giovanni and the Commendatore fight their duel. It’s a remarkable triple piece of music that embodies all the weird contradictions that make Don Giovanni a unique piece. It includes comic music, serious music, and music that should leave you astonished and confused.
