Dr. Mark James Learmonth is an animal ethicist and animal welfare scientist currently working for Bristol Zoological Society (Bristol, England, United Kingdom), as their Lead Ethicist and an Animal Behaviour and Welfare Project Manager. He also lectures for two university Master’s degree programmes, partnered with two Bristol universities – The University of Bristol and The University of the West of England (UWE). Mark is responsible for running the research, animal and human ethics programme established by BZS in 2024. Mark is keenly interested in the ethics of human-animal interactions, especially those interactions that are initiated by the animal participant, as well as promoting positive functional/adaptive behaviours in animals to achieve optimal positive welfare states in zoo housed animals. Furthermore, Mark has investigated and published reviews on balancing priorities for animal welfare, visitor education and visitor entertainment and engagement. Mark believes that these priorities shouldn’t be considered as mutually exclusive priorities, as what is best for the animals can also be best for visitor engagement, when well-considered and applied correctly.
