For the workshop sessions, four different topics will be provided for participants to choose from during registration. Each group will work on developing strategies for different types of human–animal interactions and present their results at the workshop. The maximum number of participants in each group is 20.
There will be no translation during the workshop. Participants will discuss and interact directly with the foreign lecturers. Please confirm that you have basic English conversation skills before registering.

The goal of the workshop is to examine two aspects of public feedings: (1) evaluative components, including the use of quantitative data, and (2) practical factors, including species and exhibit components. With regard to the former, we will examine using simple data collection methods and software, including ZooMonitor, to evaluate the impact of a public feeding event. In particular, we will examine how to define and design conditions and measures used for such evaluation. With respect to the latter, we will examine features that are helpful in setting up a public feeding event, including where and how to give visitors the ability to present food. In particular, this latter focus will use hypothetical and live examples to examine how to set up a successful public feeding event for those conditions.

The public often has the opportunity to be near and interact with a wide variety of species in the care of zoos, aquariums, leisure farms, and cafes. In many cases, positive animal welfare outcomes are possible. In this workshop, we will examine the conditions that create a strong foundation for animal welfare in animal-visitor interaction programs, learn to practically evaluate programs, and to refine programs based on evaluations. We will consider both existing and new animal-visitor interaction programs, allowing participants to generate ideas for new interaction programs and refine existing programs in support of animal welfare.

In this workshop participants will be introduced to the concept of an ethical matrix, and how it may be used by zoos to consider all stakeholders in an animal performance or display, including the animals themselves. Furthermore, we will discuss research around unintended or undesirable perceptions of the suitability of personal ownership of exotic animals as pets or entertainment items, and how we may avoid the portrayal of animals in this light during animal encounters, performances and displays. Participants will learn why centring of the animal at the core of the experience and as the most important stakeholder in terms of outcomes is necessary. Participants will learn how to maximise positive impacts for the involved animals, yet still provide for the needs of other important stakeholders, namely the visitor participants (in both extra paid encounters and in animal displays provided as part of the zoo/aquarium entry fee). Participants will be split into small teams and complete a practical exercise, using an ethical matrix to evaluate the viability of a new animal performance or encounter, identify key stakeholders and their needs, learn to centre the animals’ perspective and experience, and create key messaging that will enhance the visitor experience while safeguarding against unintended or undesirable visitor perceptions of the performance/experience.
