With more variants coming up and people urging to go back to life before COVID, vaccination rates are key to ensure a safe environment to people. For this, data reported by health department on the number of people vaccinated is a good metric to follow the progress make on this area.
The following is the replication of the map for number of people vaccinated by states across United States of America, with updated numbers from Bloomberg tracker.
Comment about the color scale:
When discretizing the color scale, we lose some variation of the continuous values that at the moment of categorize them seemed to all have the same number of vaccinated people. Take as an example , from the coloring we think they have the same Colorado: In the above plot looks like the same number of Utah, Nevada en other low vaccination states, however when using continuous scale is easy to see the difference and that Colorado has more population vaccinated than Utah, Nevada. To show the difference, here is the same plot but with continuous scale:
Interpretation and additional comments on this map:
We can see that the state with more people vaccinated -in absolute numbers- is California, followed by Texas, Florida and New York. Some states with low number of people vaccinated are Wyoming, North Dakota and Alaska. The vaccinated people ranges from 335 thousand and 32 million by state, with most states closer to the lower tail of the distribution.
Also, this map could be more insightful if instead of number of people vaccinated, we plotted the percentage of people vaccinated as the number of people per state varies so much. This could show states where the policies have lead to a higher coverage of vaccination vs the ones with a need of a stronger campaign and measures.
