One major difference in different customers making the reservation is whether they are bringing underage members. This is an influencing factor when choosing which room to book. Here are some analysis on different aspect influenced by underage members in the group and possible reasons behind them.
General introduction on customer group members.
Each reservation is made by one or a group of customers. Customers are categorized as adults, children, and babies.
Here is a radical hierarchy showing how customer groups are consist of :
Most reservations are made by 2 adults with no child or baby, followed by single travelers. The number of reservations decreases as the amount of underage members in the group increases.
It can be concluded that most people prefer to travel with no children.
It's also worth noticing that there are several cases including only babies, this might be caused by errors in original data or special events that is rare.
Special Requests made by different kind of groups
The special requests made with reservations can indicate one possible reason that customers prefer to travel without underage members: Traveling alone or without underage members is easier and does not require much accommodation.
The Group with underage members overall makes more special requests. Although most cases made no special cases, it can still be observed that the number of average special requests made by groups with underage members is higher.
Preference of Different Customer Groups
Hotel Types
Here we explore the hotel type preference by customer with different underage members.
As underage members grow from 0 to 3, customers prefer resort hotel more. One possible reason is resort hotel is more suitable for larger groups and children.
However when underage member grow to 3 (or more), the preference of city hotel increases. This might caused by lack of data. Another possible reason might be the life spends are higher in these groups, and its harder to schedule and arrange travel for these groups, thus they prefer city hotel which is closer and more convenient.
It is more obvious in this chart that groups with underage members overall prefer resort hotel more than other groups.
For groups of all underage, they mostly prefer city hotel. This might because underage members prefer city more than resorts, or they are restricted to be in city area.
Hotel Average Daily Rate
ADR stands for average daily rate. Different type of groups indicates different price preference.
All underage group shows highest price sensitivity, these groups usually do not have income and depend on sponsorship.
Single groups prefers lower price than other all adults groups. Single traveler usually have more fix cost can't share than groups. On the other hand they require smaller rooms that cost less.
Groups with underage members prefer highest priced hotel rooms. Underage members usually need more care and accommodation and service, thus require larger/ more serviced rooms.
When looking at the price preference of groups with different amount of underage members, it can be seen that as the number of underage member grows, the price sensitivity decreases. Groups with more underage members are booking more expensive rooms. This might caused by larger groups are requiring larger rooms and more service.
From the violin plot it can be seen that more reservation made in no underage group are in lower price, by contrast more reservations in the 2 underage group are in higher price. A possible reason might be groups with no underage member are more likely to be younger and lack of wealth accumulation. Where group with w underage members are more likely to be older and able to raise 2 children, which indicates they tends to accumulate more wealth thus more are booking above average priced rooms.
For 3 underage group, the chart shows similar pattern as before, the average ADR decreases. This might caused by lack of data points, or more life expenses in extra underage groups.
Conclusion
From the analysis above it can be concluded that:
1.People travel/make hotel reservation less when they are bringing underage members. And single customers tends to book lower priced rooms than group customers.
2.When bringing more underage members, the room customers book tends to be more expense, and the special request (services, accommodations) increases.
3.The data also shows lack of information of more extreme cases, but overall explains well the trends in different membered groups.
