About Kawauchi Campus of Tohoku University (東北大学川内キャンパス)
Tohoku University’s Kawauchi Campus is located on the former site of the Ninomaru (二の丸) of Sendai Castle (仙台城), at the foot of Mount Aoba (青葉山), near the historic Honmaru (本丸, main enclosure). Surrounded by abundant natural landscapes and rich historical heritage—including preserved sites and archival materials—the campus offers a distinctive environment where history and nature coexist. We warmly invite you to explore the area as your time permits.
The Main Library of Tohoku University Library (東北大学附属図書館本館)
The Main Library, located near the conference venue, is open to all visitors. In particular, the Digital Archives provide free access to an extensive collection of resources related to Asian studies.
Tohoku University Digital Archive (ToUDA) (東北大学デジタルアーカイブ)
Visitors are also encouraged to enjoy the exhibition on The Tale of Genji: The Enduring Art of "Miyabi," supervised by Prof. Hiroshi Yokomizo of the Graduate School of Arts and Letters as well as GPJS.
Tohoku University Botanical Garden (東北大学植物園)
The Botanical Garden, which preserves the natural environment of Mount Aoba in its original form, is home to a diverse range of rare plant species and birdlife. Visitors can experience the changing beauty of the seasons throughout the year.
Although currently open on a limited basis, the garden welcomes all visitors (admission is free).
Santaro Path (三太郎の小径)
Santaro Path, extending behind Kawauchi Hagi Hall in front of the main library, was established in commemoration of Jiro Abe (阿部次郎), a literary figure closely associated with the university. The path offers visitors a sense of the rich mountainous landscapes characteristic of the Tohoku region.
A café is located in Kawauchi Hagi Hall,
Sendai City Museum (仙台市博物館)
Located approximately a five-minute walk from our campus, the Sendai City Museum houses significant materials related to Date Masamune (伊達政宗), lord of the Sendai Domain. Among its most notable exhibits is the National Treasure certificate granting Roman citizenship to Hasekura Tsunenaga (支倉常長), the leader of the Keichō Embassy to Europe and the namesake of our Japanese Studies network, the “Hasekura League.”
A statue of Lu Xun (魯迅) stands in the museum garden.
Also, another statue of Lu Xun and his memorial lecture hall are located in the Katahira (片平) Campus, the university's main campus.
