𧬠The Theory of Knots in Life Sciences
by Prof. Sofia Lambropoulou (National Technical University of Athens)
ποΈ Friday, July 25, 2025
π Tokyo Electron Katahira Campus, Tohoku University
This lecture introduces the fascinating world of knot theory β a modern branch of topology concerned with the classification of knots through powerful mathematical invariants, such as the celebrated Jones polynomial. Prof. Lambropoulou will explain fundamental concepts and explore surprising connections of knot theory with physics, chemistry, and biology, highlighting applications from DNA recombination and protein folding to polymer science and statistical mechanics. The talk also presents an extension of the theory to knotoids, offering new perspectives on entanglement in life sciences and beyond.Β
