Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add the Idea Lab 3D printers to Cura?
When installing Cura, you will be prompted to add a printer (or, if you already have Cura installed, you can add additional models by going to Settings > Printer > Add Printer...).
On the Add Printer pop-up screen, select Ultimaker Printer.
Next, click on Add Local Printer, in the lower right-hand corner of the pop-up screen.
Then click on the bar labeled Add a non-networked printer.
Select Ultimaker 2+ Connect and click Add.
What settings should I select in Cura?
Your settings in Cura will need to vary depending on the model being printed. However, the following settings (found under Custom) can be helpful as a starting point:
Layer Height: 0.2
Initial Layer Height: 0.1
Infill Pattern: Gyroid
Infill Percentage: 15%
Generate Support: Yes
Support Placement: Everywhere
Adhesion type: Skirt
Support Z Distance: 0.15 (this will need to be added from Preferences > Configure Cura... > Settings)
Alternatively, download the Idea Lab Cura profile from our Software Settings page.
Can I use more than one colour in a print?
Yes! It is possible to pause a print on the Idea Lab's 3D printers, change the filament spool, then restart the print.
This means you can have multiple coloured layers along the z-axis (base to top). Unfortunately, you can't change the colour of specific areas of a print (e.g fingernails on a a hand).Â
Please note that you will need to manually pause the print yourself. If you intend to do this during a booking, you will need to be present for the exact moment you would like to change colours, this will not be carried out by Idea Lab staff. However, staff can assist with the changing of the filament spool.
