Momentum is a collection of essays by the Philippines prominent economists, National Scientist Dr. Raul Fabella, Dr. Emmanuel de Dios, former Finance Undersecretary Romeo Bernardo, political economist Calixto Chikiamco, and the late former Philippine Socio-Economic Cayetano Paderanga, Jr.
The book is a compilation of selected op-ed pieces published under the weekly "Introspective" column in the BusinessWorld newspaper from 2019 to 2021. Written by Kristine Alcantara, Romeo Bernardo, Calixto Chikiamco, Ramon Clarete, Emmanuel de Dios and Raul Fabella, the columns present learned insights on the country’s persistent problems and pragmatic policy solutions to overcome hurdles on the path towards sustained growth. The book is a must-read for policymakers and citizens alike as the country recovers from the effects of the global health crisis and chooses new leaders in the upcoming May 2022 elections.
The paper examined the relationship of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions with real per capita GDP and energy consumption in the ASEAN region using panel data from 1960 to 2021. It employed various panel unit root tests (IPS, Fisher-ADF, Fisher-PP) and panel cointegration tests (Kao and Pedroni). The study finds robust empirical evidence supporting the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, suggesting the existence of a per capita income turning point (approximately USD 4,808.85) where CO2 emissions and real income begin to decouple. This suggests the presence of an environmentally sustainable economic growth path beyond this threshold. The study highlights the importance of a reduction of fossil fuel use and the adoption of coordinated strategic plans among ASEAN member states to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

“… Drawing on an eclectic group of authors, including Schumpeter, Piketty, Marx and many others, the 11 chapters range far and wide, from macroeconomics and international economic policy to institutional change and social policy. Taken together, they persuasively set out an agenda for a fairer and more prosperous Philippines. Professor Fabella’s book is a must-read for anybody interested not only in the Philippines, but also the developing world in general.”– HAL HILL, H.W. Arndt Professor Emeritus of Southeast Asian Economies Australian National University

“The essays by Calixto Chikiamco in this collection are keen and valuable commentaries on current economic affairs and policies. They call to mind economic policies that need change if, as a country, we are to sustain economic growth at a high and efficient level of performance. When they deal with economic policies, the essays try to disentangle them so as to expose what is wrong and to propose solutions at their fine roots. Thus, unlike some commentaries that criticize policies, he also offers the way out of the problems.” — Dr. Gerardo P. Sicat, former Socioeconomic Planning Secretary and National Economic and Development Authority Director-General
