Bruce Balentine

Bruce Balentine is a design consultant specializing in speech, audio, and multimodal user interfaces. In three decades of work with speech technologies, Balentine has designed user interfaces for telecommunications, desktop multimedia, entertainment, language training, agricultural, medical, in-vehicle, and home automation products. Now retired, Balentine continues his partnership with EIG as Chief Scientist Emeritus, and serves as Chief HCI Engineer with Intelligently Interactive. He is currently specializing in new conversational interfaces for intelligent agents and robots, and this year will be publishing (with David Attwater) his new book “Conversational Interfaces: Past, Present and Future.” Mr. Balentine holds two degrees in music composition from the University of North Texas.

Prof. Preeti Rao

Dr. Preeti Rao is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay, India is associated with the Digital Audio Processing Lab, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay. Her research interests encompass Speech and Audio Signal Processing, Music Information Retrieval, Coding of Speech at Low-Bit rates, etc.

Dr. Nandini Chatterjee Singh

Dr. Nandini Chatterjee Singh is the recipient of the prestigious Young Women Scientist Award for her contributions in the field of neuroscience, awarded by the Department of Biotechnology, Gov't of India, India and has been recognised by the National Academy of Sciences, India on the occasion of International Women's Day in March, 2018. Dr. N. C. Singh also leads the flagship project titled LIBRE at UNESCO MGIEP. Her research interests include Neuroimaging, Language Processing, Development, Cognitive Neuroscience, etc.

Prof. Subhendu Ghosh

Worked as an Assistant Professor & Associate Professor at the Department of Biophysics, University of Delhi South Campus, and as a Professor at the University of Hyderabad. Worked as a Visiting Scientist at (i) North Western University Medical School, Chicago, (ii) University of Chicago Medical School, (iii) Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden, Germany, (iv) Technical University of Dresden, Germany, (v) Institute of Molecular Physiology & Genetics, Bratislava, Slovakia. Delivered invited talks all over USA, UK, Germany, Italy, Slovakia. Currently, Prof Ghosh is a Professor and Head, Department of Biophysics, University of Delhi South Campus.Prof. Ghosh, an eminent Indian vocalist is a disciple of Ustad Hafeez Ahmed Khan of Rampur Gharana & Pt Ramesh Nadkarni of Bhendi Bazar Gharana. He has performed in India, USA, UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland. He is a founder member of music groups: PRATIDHWANI (Delhi), Sangwari (Delhi) & DHUN (Germany)

Dr. Shakuntala Mahanta

Associate Professor, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati, Assam, India

Dr. Mahanta specializes in phonology, a branch of linguistics which primarily concerns itself with the human knowledge and organization of sound systems. As a fall-out of working in this specialized area she also takes an interest in the interaction of phonology with morphology, phonetics and to a lesser extent with syntax. She has worked and is still working in each of these areas. She has worked on phonological theory and dealt with various aspects of vowel harmony, stress and intonation in South Asian languages. Her work in phonology has been on vowel harmony, exceptions and also on stress and rhythm.

Dr. Somdev Kar

Associate Professor of Linguistics, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Ropar, India

Dr. Somdev Kar is an associate professor of Linguistics at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar. He completed his MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Hyderabad (India) in 2004. In 2005, he moved to the University of Tübingen in Germany to pursue doctoral research in Linguistics under the supervision of Prof. Hubert Truckenbrodt and received his PhD degree in 2009. His doctoral research is in the area of Optimality Theory (Phonology) and Distributed Morphology, and with a focus on the syllable structure of Bangla. Later, Dr. Kar worked on the phonology of a group of Tibeto-Burman languages of Sikkim as part of his post-doctoral research at CIIL, Mysore, India. His areas of interest broadly cover Phonetics, Phonology (Optimality Theory), Morphology Speech Processing, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Forensic Linguistics, etc.

Dr. Priyankoo Sarmah

Associate Professor, Department of HSS, Linguistics, IIT Guwahati, Assam, India

Dr. Sarmah received his PhD in Linguistics from the Department of Linguistics, University of Florida. Prior to that, he received his MPhil in Linguistics in 2005 and MA in Linguistics in 2002 from the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad. He is an Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG). He is actively involved in the Center for Linguistic Science and Technology at IITG. Before joining IITG in 2011, he worked in the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea (2008-2011). His research interests are phonetics, speech analysis, speech perception and speech technology development. He is passionate about production and perception of tones and have worked on tones in Bodo, Dimasa, Mizo, Paite, Poula, Rabha and Tiwa. He is also interested in vowel production ad perception. Recently he has been working on sociophonetics of Assamese and Angami.

Dr. Shyamal Kumar Das Mondal

Dr. Shyamal Kumar Das Mondal obtained his PhD from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India and he joined IIT Kharagpur in 2010. He is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Educational Technology, IIT Kharagpur and is the Vice Chairman of ACSSC / ERP IIS. His areas of research interest include Speech and Signal Processing, Pedagogy of teaching learning process, etc.

Dr. Indranil Dutta

Asst. Prof., Department of Computational Linguistics, EFLU Hyderabad

Dr. Indranil Dutta obtained his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (USA) and was formerly a Lecturer at Rice University (USA). He is associated with the speech and language processing laboratory, SPLangLab, at EFLU Hyderabad. His research interests include acoustic phonetics and phonology, speech sciences, corpus based and corpus driven approaches in linguistics, statistical natural language processing, deep learning, quantitative linguistics, and natural language processing, digital signal processing, etc.

Dr. Vinoo Alluri

Assistant Professor, Cognitive Science Lab, International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-H), Hyderabad

Dr. Vinoo Alluri is an Assistant Professor in the Cognitive Science Lab at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-H), Hyderabad. She has a background in engineering (B.E, Electronics and Communication) with a focus on music technology (M.Sc, Music Engineering Technology) in addition to a PhD in Musicology. She also has a background in Western Classical Music (Violin and Piano). Her main research interests lie in the fields of Music Cognition and Computational Neuroscience. Her work has primarily revolved around investigating music processing in the brain in the novel naturalistic paradigm, which she introduced as part of her PhD and has hence focused on developing, validating, and improving methods concerning the same. The method is based on functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Music Information Retrieval (MIR), and multivariate analysis, and has recently been acknowledged as a new trend in the field of neuromusicology. She has successfully published in international journals such as Neuroimage, Psychomusicology: Music, Mind and Brain, Cortex, Human Brain Mapping, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, Journal of Neuroscience Methods, and Music Perception, among others. In neuroscience, her current focus is to investigate how individual differences (personality, empathy, and preferences) modulate brain connectivity while listening to music. On the behavioral front, she is interested in understanding the potential role of music as a tool in assessing depressive and addictive tendencies.

Dr. Madhushree Chakrabarty

Independent Research Scholar, Former Fullbright Post Doctoral Fellow(Linguistics), Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Dr. Madhushree Chakrabarty is an independent researcher. Her areas of expertise include behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying language processing. Her scientific endeavor stretches from investigating language cognition in real-world everyday contexts to a deep search to unravel its intricate intertwining with the other cognitive mechanisms. In 2016 she received Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship and was affiliated with the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Chakrabarty was a DST-CSRI postdoctoral fellow at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata from 2015 to 2016. She was associated with the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, Kolkata as a DST-CSRI postdoctoral fellow from 2012 to 2014. She received a junior research fellowship from the Indian Statistical Institute. She was a former Lecturer at AYJNIHH, ERC, Kolkata.

Dr. Kaustuv Kanti Ganguli

Post-Doctoral Associate, New York University (NYU), Abu Dhabi

Kaustuv Kanti Ganguli is a professional vocalist, an engineer, and a budding musicologist trained in Hindustani music tradition. After finishing his PhD at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India, Kaustuv has joined the New York University Abu Dhabi, UAE, as a Postdoctoral Associate. He has got several invited talks, international journal and conference publications to his credit. His thesis work includes research on artificial intelligence in music, with a focus on computational musicology. Kaustuv has been performing in various cities of India as well as abroad and is a recipient of several prestigious accolades. His vision is to promote experimental works on music production, analysis, and pedagogy with a view to converging his knowledge in music and technology fronts. Recently Kaustuv has founded a start-up, MuSeeing, to corroborate his research ideas in the regime of technology transfer.
