ICMAM Africa

ICMAM Africa is a partner of the AFRICAN COORDINATION FOR MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH (ACMSR).

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2026), held in Philadelphia, United States of America, from 23 to 30 July 2026, provided an exceptional opportunity for the international mathematical community to exchange ideas, present recent scientific advances, and strengthen international cooperation.

On the sidelines of the Congress, a number of African mathematical researchers, together with colleagues from the African diaspora, engaged in a series of informal yet highly constructive discussions concerning Africa's participation in the global mathematical landscape and the opportunities available to strengthen its scientific visibility.

These discussions drew upon the collective experience of participants who had attended several previous editions of the International Congress of Mathematicians.

This accumulated experience enabled a balanced and objective assessment of the current state of African participation, while also highlighting the considerable progress achieved by the continent and the challenges that remain to be addressed.

The participants shared the conviction that Africa possesses outstanding mathematical talent and growing scientific capacity. They further agreed that the next stage of development requires stronger coordination, more effective communication, broader collaboration, and a long-term continental vision capable of connecting African researchers, both within the continent and throughout the diaspora.

Accordingly, the participants agreed to establish the AFRICAN COORDINATION FOR MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH (ACMR) as a collaborative platform dedicated to promoting communication, encouraging scientific cooperation, facilitating the exchange of information and expertise, supporting joint initiatives, and contributing to the sustained advancement of mathematical research across Africa.

The ACMSR therefore reflects a collective commitment to opening a new chapter for African mathematics—one founded on cooperation rather than isolation, coordination rather than fragmentation, and shared responsibility rather than individual effort.
