- Dr. Nayoung KWON (University of Oregon, USA)

• Title: When power matters grammatically: Investigation of the processing of honorifics in Korean

  • Using the honorific subject-verb agreement in Korean, this study investigated how Confucian values of social hierarchies are processed during sentence processing. Experiment results showed that honorific violations elicited processing difficulties. The use of the honorific verb with an unhonorifiable subject elicited lower naturalness ratings, longer reading times, and a P600, compared to the congruous condition, just as for number, person, and gender agreement. However, the agreement between the honorific subject and verb was asymmetrical. The mismatch effect was smaller or even absent when an honorifiable subject was not accompanied by an honorific verb, suggesting that an honorific verb requires an honorifiable subject but not vice versa. The findings suggest that Confucian conventions of the social hierarchy have become a part of grammar in Korean. The results also suggest that honorific agreement in Korean is a partially grammaticalized phenomenon, with the human parser being sensitive to the degree of grammaticalization.

• Title: Teaching Korean to Generation MZ and Generation Alpha: Using AI and VR in Language Learning

  • In this talk, I will demonstrate the impact of recent developments in AI and VR on language learning, specifically for Generation MZ and Alpha, who are born as natives in AI and VR technology. I will show how Large Language Models like ChatGPT can transform language learning classrooms, and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of AI and VR-driven methods based on empirical investigations in real-world classroom settings.

- Dr. Sun Hee PARK (Ewha Womans University, South Korea)

• Title: 제2언어 한국어 시제 상 습득 연구의 가설과 연구방법

  • 제2언어 한국어 습득 연구에서 시제와 상 습득은 지속적으로 많은 관심을 받아 왔다. 제2언어 시제 상 습득 연구는 대조분석 가설과 오류 분석을 기반으로 한 연구에서 출발하여 학습자 언어의 체계성을 추적하는 중간언어로 전환을 맞이하면서 다양한 이론과 가설을 기반으로 한 연구로 이행하였다. 본 연구는 지난 2008년부터 2023년까지 약 15년간 수행된 제2언어 한국어 시제와 상 습득 연구에 적용된 가설과 연구 방법을 검토하고 향후 시제 상 습득 연구의 방향을 모색한다.  학습자의 시제와 상 관련 형태 사용 관찰 연구는 오류분석을 거쳐 다양한 시제 형태소 발달의 경로를 추적한 함축척도(implicational scaling) 활용 연구 등이 있었다. 형태 기반 연구(form oriented research)에 활용된 가설로는 시상가설(Aspect Hypothesis)와 담화구조가설(Discourse Hypothesis) 등이 있었다. 이들 가설을 확인하기 위한 연구 도구로 이야기 글의 빈칸 채우기 과제, 영화 보고 이야기 다시 쓰기(story retelling task), 딕토글로스(Dictogloss) 등 다양한 과제와 도구가 활용되어 왔다. 본 연구는 시제 상 습득 연구를 시제 및 상의 문법 범주별, 형태별, 기능별로 나누어 점검하고 향후 연구 수행을 위한 연구 방법을 모색하도록 한다.
