Department of Physics which was started in 1965 as a supporting Department to provide higher education for rural children has now flourished as a full-fledged Research Department. Apart from regular Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses the Department is offering M.Phil., Ph.D., and Post Doctoral programs. The faculty members of the Department carry out both theoretical and experimental research in various fields such as
Supercapacitors
Semiconducting Nanostructures
EPR studies
Plasma Physics
Solar Energy Devices
Lithium ion batteries
Luminescence
High pressure and low temperature studies
Glass and ceramics
Nano bio-composites
and have acquired research projects funded by UGC, DST, DRDO, ISRO and BRNS. The Department motivates students to take up National Level Examinations and to undergo Summer Internship programs in reputed Institutes. Faculty members are actively engaged in various academic, administrative activities of the parent and other institutions. Regular visits of experts from Academia facilitate the vibrant growth of the Department. The Astronomy club of the Department conducts "Sky Watch" programs periodically and on some specific celestial occasions. The Department has many sophisticated research equipments such as UV-Vis, Photoluminescence, SEM, XRD, FTIR, Impedance analyzer, Keithley source meter etc., The Department is also funded by DST-FIST and has International Student Chapters namely SPIE (Society for Photonics and Industrial Engineering) and ACS (American Chemical Society).
