International Center for the Scientific Development of Shrimp Aquaculture

In addition to our two OIE reference laboratories, one for white spot disease (WSD) and the other for acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), we maintain a Nuclear Breeding Center (NBC) where we have successfully identified and bred families of WSD-resistant shrimp, and confirmed that this WSD resistance is heritable. We have also established an indoor culture facility with high biosecurity and a closed circulation water system to support the entire life cycle of these WSD-resistant shrimp. To achieve our mission of a sustainable shrimp aquaculture industry, we focus on the following important challenges:

1. control measures to minimize the risk of disease outbreak and transmission
2. genetically based production of disease-resistant shrimp
3. shrimp culture systems that conserve energy and water
4. development of scientific, aquacultural and corporate skills that serve both academia and the shrimp aquaculture industry.

To achieve a sustainable aquaculture industry for shrimp, the Center focuses on the following important issues:

• control measures to minimize risks of disease outbreak and transmission
• genetically based approaches for screening disease-resistant shrimp
• shrimp culture systems that conserve energy and water
