The online journal Translation & Interpreting has already confirmed a special issue publication related to the ICCT4 entitled Community Translation for Equity and Inclusion - Non-Governmental Organizations and Grassroots Initiatives, guest edited by Anne Beinchet and Marija Todorova. A French publication has yet to be confirmed. 

Authors wishing to submit an abstract are kindly requested to do so through the journal’s website by October 31, 2025. For comprehensive details, please refer to the Call for Papers available on the journal’s website.

Special Issue on Community Translation for Equity and Inclusion - Non-Governmental Organizations and Grassroots Initiatives

This special issue aims to emphasize the centrality of equity and inclusion in community translation (CT) for linguistically diverse communities. It will explore the various ways in which CT promotes social justice, specifically in the contexts of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and grassroots initiatives. This special issue aims to shed light on the practices, challenges, and transformative potential of community translation. It also seeks to deepen our understanding of how translation can be used as a tool to promote social equity and inclusiveness. 

The connection between translation and social justice has become a topic of great interest in recent years. In the last decade, researchers have explored this link from various angles, emphasizing the importance of translation in activism and advocacy. For example, translation has been recognized as a key component in the growth of civil society, particularly in post-socialist contexts such as Central and Eastern Europe (Todorova, 2018). Studies of international non-governmental organizations have investigated the impact of translation practices on global communication strategies and the dissemination of human rights discourse across linguistic and cultural divides (Tesseur, 2023). More recently, community-based translation initiatives have examined translation as an antiracist approach in development NGOs (Chasukwa and Crack, 2024). However, there is a lack of comprehensive research and discussion on the use of community translation as a tool for inclusion in NGOs and grassroots initiatives.  

We are eager to explore both conceptual and applied perspectives on the diverse facets of community-based translation, all within the overarching context of fairness and diversity. Some potential areas of inquiry include:  

1. Promotion of Equity and Inclusion in Community Translation Theory and Practices

2. Community Translation in NGOs and Grassroots Organizations: Case Studies surrounding the Linguistic Barrier Resolution approaches and Social Justice Promotion

3. Community Translation Practices in Marginalized Communities: Ethical Considerations and Power Dynamics

4. Community Translation & Technology: Facilitating Information and Service Accessibility through Digital Platforms

5. Collaborative Community Translation: Partnerships between Translators, Community Members and Other Stakeholders

This special issue welcomes contributions from scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and members of NGOs and grassroots organizations who are interested in translation studies, social justice, community engagement, and language rights. It will provide valuable insights for researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders seeking to understand the transformative potential of community translation in fostering equity and inclusion.
