IN AN attempt to make the most of the current situation amidst the pandemic, the ICA SHARP Gymnastics Team sought out alternative methods to pursue its passion for the sport while still adhering to the strict guidelines of social distancing.
In late August, the members, Charlize Cheng (Batch 2020), Abigail Bautista (11-Mercy), Samantha Co (11-Counsel), Gwyneth Po, Stacey Yu (both from 11-Goodness), Fiona Recto (11-Wisdom), Chelsea Ang (9-Compassion), Jasmine Tan (9-Responsibility) and Naomi Conti (9-Prudence), decided to conduct online training sessions with the help of their coaches. Even with the new setup, the members and coaches still manage to operate with full efficiency and effectiveness. Each session consists of stretching, enhancing their tumbling abilities, and learning dances. With the increased need for independence and self-reliance, the gymnasts are challenged to quickly progress in executing stunts and tricks. Striving for perfection, the members practice and polish their skills on Zoom while the coaches record them and comment on aspects to improve on afterwards.
Despite the many restrictions hindering them from engaging in gymnastics, the team persistently devotes time and effort three times a week for online training to make even the slightest bit of progress and strengthen the bond between teammates while at home. Team Captain Abigail Bautista remarks, “Having to take things into our own hands, I think that online training has been worthwhile because it helps the team improve its skills in the face of a pandemic.”
