Bharathiar University, established in 1982 in Coimbatore by the Government of Tamil Nadu, spans a 1,000-acre campus near the scenic Maruthamalai Hills. Initiated as the Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras, it gained recognition from the University Grants Commission in 1985. The university hosts 39 departments offering 54 postgraduate and Ph.D. programs, affiliates over 143 colleges. Accredited 'A++' by NAAC, it ranks 46ᵗʰ among Indian universities and 10ᵗʰ among state universities in the NIRF 2025 rankings. The DRDO-BU Centre for Life Sciences, a joint venture with DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, serves as a hub for advanced life sciences research.
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field, merging biology, computer and information sciences, crucial for managing large data sets like NGS to aid in drug discovery and Biomarker identification. Bharathiar University launched India's first postgraduate bioinformatics course in 2001, later upgraded to offer M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs in 2005. Our department has well-equipped infrastructure facilities and fosters research activities in major thrust areas like Computational Biology, Computer-aided Drug Discovery, Data Mining and Text mining, Comparative genomics, Health informatics and Biocomputing.
