The annual IBRU Competition Champion Recognition Award is presented to the Member who has the highest accumulated point total based on competition results over the course of the calendar year. Points will be awarded for finishes in any IBRU or AHA/BJCP-sanctioned competition during the calendar year.
It is the responsibility of the Member to make sure that their scores are accounted for in the standings by submitting their results using the IBRU Competition Champion Submission Form. IBRU will utilize the “honor system” when accepting submission information but reserves the right to ask for confirmation of any submission for any reason. Any Member found to be falsifying submissions will be disqualified from future Competition Champion seasons.
Points can be accumulated in the following Scoring Categories as detailed below:
Points for Competition Finishes
1st place = 3 points
2nd place = 2 points
3rd place = 1 point
Honorable Mention = 0.5 point
(Note that a 1.5x multiplier will be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishes in IBRU competitions)
Points for Best of Show Awards
BOS First Place = 4.5 points
BOS Second Place = 4 point
BOS Third Place = 3.5 point
BOS Honorable Mention = 3.3 point
(Points for BOS awards include the points for the first place finish)
Great Score Points (GSP)
Great Score Points are created to reward competitors who received high marks for their entry even if they did not not end up receiving an award.
Great Score Points are awarded for an outstanding consensus score received from an AHA/ BJCP-sanctioned competition, where the entry receiving the score did not place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their category. Individual score sheets will not be considered here - only consensus scores will be accepted.
For example, if a member receives a consensus score of 38 but does not place in their category, the member would be awarded 0.5 GSPs for their 38.
If that same person scored a 38 but finished in 2nd place in the category, they would receive the 2 points for their 2nd place finish but would not be eligible for any GSPs.
GSP scale
46-50 = 1 point
41-45.9 = 0.75 points
36-40.9 = 0.5 points
31-35.9 = 0.33 points
26-30.9 = 0.25 points
Points for Custom Category Awards
1st place = 1 points
2nd place = 0.67 points
3rd place = 0.33 point
(This includes competition-specific awards like Heavy Medal, Scariest Brew, Brewers Choice, etc.)
Other Details
The Club President is responsible for coordinating the administration of the Competition Champion Recognition Award and will interpret these Rules and adjudicate any disputes to the best of their ability.
Competition Champion Standings will be maintained and made available throughout the year.
All fractional point totals will be rounded up to the second decimal place.
A limit of four entries per competition can be counted towards the Competition Champion scoring. This limit is imposed to help even the playing field (in cases where a person may submit a large amount of entries). If more than four entries are eligible for points, only four of the top four point totals will be used in the calculation.
A “competition season” (or “season”) is defined as the period of time starting with the day after the annual IBRU Holiday Party and ending with the day of the subsequent IBRU Holiday Party, i.e., approximately one year.
In the event that no Holiday Party is scheduled, the Board of Directors will determine and announce with as much advance notice as possible when the season will end.
The Competition Champion point totals for any given season will include any eligible competitions that announce their awards during that season. Points for competitions that take place prior to the end of the season but announce their awards after the start of the next season will count towards the next season’s totals.
The winner of the Competition Champion will be announced at the IBRU Holiday Party.
Only one point allocation will be awarded to any single entry. If an entry qualifies for multiple allocations (e.g., a GSP and a Custom Award), it is the brewer’s responsibility to select one of the Scoring Categories.
For 2023 only, scores will be accepted for competitions occurring on or after March 11, 2023.
The 2023 Season began on 3/11/23 and ended on 12/16/23.
The 2024 Season began on 12/17/23 and ended on 12/14/24.
The 2025 Season begins on 12/15/24 and ends the day of the 2025 IBRU Holiday Party.
