Dr. Ibrahim Issifu holds a PhD; masters in Economic Policy Management and MBA in Finance from Nagoya University and University of Ghana respectively. He is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. His main research interests lie in the intersection of plastic pollution, financing sustainable ocean economy and sustainability. Prior to joining UBC, Dr. Issifu worked as a Research Assistant at the Nagoya University, Japan. He has extensive research collaborations with reputable institutions (Stanford University), and environmental organizations (Pew Charitable Trusts) leading to publications of numerous papers. He also has experience teaching applying microeconomics at Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia.
Dr. Issifu is an active member of his community. In 2020, he has been a visiting scholar to University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani and Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience, Ghana. He is member of Scientists Network for an Effective Plastics Treaty (SNEPT) based in Norway; University of Washington - Marine Plastic Pollution Roadmap; and also serves on the Membership Committee of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) chapter of Vancouver and has participated in Contemporary Challenges to World Order: The Search for Solutions, as part of a larger International Leadership Conference (ILC) sponsored by UPF with support from The Washington Times Foundation. Currently, he served as a Reviewer of Frontiers of Marine Science, Ecological Economics, Marine Policy and MDPI. In addition to these academic service roles, Dr. Issifu is a member of the 10 Billion Strong, U.S.-based non-profit dedicated to training, and supporting the next generation of environmental leaders via its flagship project Accelerating Climate Ambitions With Indigenous Knowledge and Nature-based Solutions.
