Ian Power (1984) is a composer and performer in Los Angeles and Baltimore. Power’s music is insistent, suspenseful, warm, and performer-driven, and has been performed by ensembles and soloists in the US, UK, Germany, Denmark, Israel, Japan, and New Zealand. He has been commissioned by Wet Ink, Heather Roche, Mariel Roberts, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Ian has four albums of his work: Diligence, out on Edition Wandelweiser Records (Germany) in June 2020; Maintenance Hums out on Carrier Records (Chicago) in September 2020; Ave Maria: Variations on Theme by Giacinto Scelsi, out on Carrier in October 2023; and Brace Each Other, forthcoming from Semayd Records in Fall 2025. In 2023, His piece BYE BYE LOVE was premiered by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, and in 2025 his collaborative work It Allowed Them To Produce A Single Sound was made into a film by Music for Your Inbox in Los Angeles.
Ian is Associate Professor and Director of Arts Production & Management at the University of Baltimore, where he won the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018. His writing on rhetoric in new music and reviews of CDs and performances are published in Cambridge University Press’s TEMPO Journal, and he has lectured at the American Musicological Society, American Studies Association, and universities in the US, UK, and Turkey.
Ian studied primarily with Chaya Czernowin, as well as with Steven Takasugi, John Luther Adams, Antoine Beuger, Anthony Burr, Robert Morris, and Dana Wilson. He grew up in Rochester, N.Y., and has degrees from Harvard University, UC San Diego, and Ithaca College.
