Summer 1985 | Sydmonton Workshop, UK | AVI
Colm Wilkinson (Phantom), Sarah Brightman (Kristin), Clive Carter (Raoul), Myra Sands (Carlotta), Jeff Shankley (André), David Burt (Firmin), Jacque Harman (Meg), Christopher Beck (Buquet, Porter), Paul Leonard (José Qaniussi, Jailer, Don Nero), Ken Kaswall (Auctioneer, Prisoner)
Notes: Apparently a better quality. Act 1 only. Awful video quality, but audio is decent and it's interesting piece of show's history. Missing parts from Don Nero (Il Muto) to ending of AIAOY Reprise.

Notes: Copy of video above. Quality is MUCH worse than that video. Includes Don Nero and AIAoY.
1987 | VOB + smalls
Michael Crawford, Rebecca Caine, Steve Barton
Notes: Highlights. 'All I Ask of You' is audio only with still pictures; video ends at 'Notes II'. Extremely difficult to make out anything other than the figures of people; black-and-white image and very heavy generation loss. Also includes some concert performances and news clips from the Broadway and Los Angeles productions.

Ethan Freeman, Jill Washington, Simon Bowman
Notes: Proshot by RUG. Fuzzy picture, some color loss in darker parts, and hard to see face expressions except in the occasional closeups. Quite a bit of spotlight washout, but big picture and has survived fairly well for something so old.
March 9, 2000 | VOB
Scott Davies, Meredith Braun, Matthew Cammelle
Notes: Good quality video, nice colors and details. Filmer was sitting very close to the stage, but a lot of heads get in the way; there is one roving head that is particularly irksome.

Broadway
1987 | WMV
Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Steve Barton, Hal Prince, Charles Hart
Notes: Rehearsal footage, around 40 minutes long. Professionally filmed and sometimes staticky and fuzzy, but rare glimpse of the original cast and director working on the production.

Notes: Michael Crawford’s final Broadway performance; shot from the balcony, right side if you're facing the stage. The sound is good. Faces are not clear from a distance, but in the close-up shots you can make out most features. At the end is the farewell from the cast to Michael Crawford, a speech by Steve Barton and a speech by Crawford.

Ben Crawford (The Phantom), Ali Ewoldt (Christine), Rodney Ingram (Raoul), Raquel Suarez Groen (Carlotta), Carlton Moe (Piangi), Laird Mackintosh (Andre), Craig Bennett (Firmin), Kara Klein (Meg), Maree Johnson (Madame Giry)
Notes: DeChagnyTrades's master. Act 2 ONLY. Filmed blind from the house right box, so almost everything on the house right side of the stage is blocked from view. Taken on an iPhone and the camera wanders a bit throughout (audio remains clear). Most of Final Lair is completely blocked out. Not the best video, but the only known video footage of Rodney as Raoul. Also features very short (~15 second) Raoul/Christine-centric clips of Act 1 (“Little Lotte,” “Notes/Prima Donna,” and “All I Ask of You”) from other performances also featuring Ali and Rodney (taken from Instagram throughout Rodney's run).

Notes: Matinee shows. Five MP4 clips, featuring Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Wandering Child, and Point of No Return and the Final Lair. They are shot from the front row, so sometimes things can be missed. But not as much as you’d expect. It is a nice first visual look at Eryn in action. Also, if you look at the back row on the right, you can spot Rachel Anne Moore in the Sitzprobe scene! The ones shot from the right of the stage are from the 7th, the ones from the left are from the 28th.

Notes: 3 shows in 1: extended highlights of the June 25th show, Phantom-oriented highlights of June 26th show (both with Dodie Pettit as Christine), and Phantom-oriented highlights of the 1993 show, with Teri Bibb. Quality of the first two is alright, but there are many big closeups in the Teri Bibb one. The color is sepia toned but it's in great condition considering it's age. Rather hilarious flub where the lasso breaks during the 'Final Lair' of the June 25th show.

Notes: 1st Gen from Digital Master. Taper says: Act one starts at Think of Me. Missing some dialogue between TOM and Angel of Music. Short cut just before Little Lotte, then includes the entire sequence from The Mirror to the end of the first Lair. Only the Phantom's parts of Il Muto were taped. Includes the entire Rooftop. Act two starts at the last verse of "Masquerade" for "Why so Silent." Cuts made in Notes II – begins at "Raoul I'm frightened." Cut out the Rehearsal, and the Before the Premiere scenes, and video picks back up at Point Of No Return. Mode switch for DOM, and back to normal for the Final Lair. Curtain calls were not taped. Problems in Title song, Il Muto, AIAOY Reprise, Wishing, Wandering Child, and DOM – I decided to try out a different mode on the camera that supposedly helps with low lighting situations but have discovered after reviewing the tape that it distorts the picture. Essentially, everything is blurred when it moves. After the title song, switched back to normal mode, so the problem doesn't exist through MOTN or I Remember scenes, and I didn't use it for AIAOY, just the reprise. Some minor cover-ups, but nothing extensive. Chock full of close ups, even though it was taped from the very back of the balcony. One of only two videos of Lockyer as Phantom.

Notes: Most of the show, starts at Carlotta Think of Me. Shaky, but shot from the orchestra with no obstruction, so there are some incredible shots. Audio was replaced with a seperate MD recorder which doesn't quite sync in Act 2. My copy gets quite pixel-y at times and the audio sound scratchy. Apparently some issues with the flys during this one.

Most of Prima Donna and Il Muto in the second video is shot blind. A bit shaky but follows action very well. Very old and in incredible condition. Notes: In fact there are 4 Phantoms in this video because every male main cast member here (Except Piangi) played Phantom at the same time or lately.
Shot from the front rows and has amazing close-ups and nice colors, though filming is very shaky, especially in Act 1 and a few heads sometimes blocking some parts of the stage. Focusing on Sawaki's face quite often. Includes Title song, Music of the Night and the Final Lair with Eiji Akutagawa (it’s pseudonym, artist’s new pseudonym is Soma Suzuki) as Phantom.

Brad Little, Marni Raab, Jarrod Carland
Notes: Highlights of Act One only, unfortunately, running nearly 38 minutes. It includes Overture, Hannibal (incomplete - from the beginning to "he does so well opposite La Carlotta"), Think of Me, Angel of Music (mostly complete), The Mirror, The Phantom of the Opera (nearly complete), Music of the Night (incomplete), I Remember / Stranger Than You Dreamt It (from Marni waking up in bed until "secretly, secretly"), Prima Donna and All I Ask of You ("what was that" to the part where Raoul twirls her around after they kiss, then Brad's reprise ending with "the phantom asked of you," and finally a brief shot of the chandelier crashing). The picture quality is stunning, easily rivaling pro-shots. Each scene is labeled individually in both English and Chinese.

Peter Jöback (The Phantom of the Opera), Emmi Christensson (Christine Daaé), Anton Zetterholm (Vicomte Raoul de Chagny)

Notes: Matinee. Excellent video of the Brazilian production. The original Carlotta, who had been fired in June, came back to close the production in December. This was Giulia’s second-to-last performance and she is brilliant. The whole cast is really giving everything in their final shows. I believe this was the productions 3rd to last show. Filmed between heads, but the master was able to work around them quite well and rarely do they block the action. Very steady and follows the action very well.

Documentaries
December 1989 | VOB + smalls
features a CBC documentary aired in December 1989 about the first Canadian production of Phantom Of The Opera. There’s no complete musical performances per se, but plenty of rehearsal clips and a music video for the title song near the end. This was taken from a SP VHS tape recorded from the original broadcast with no analog generations. The rest of the material on the disc has at least one analog generation and includes the Tony Awards performance, the four original concept music videos (in stereo!) and the Phantom segment from a program called “The Andrew Lloyd Webber Story”.
