Due to COVID-19, the 2021 Census will be mainly conducted online. Fill in your questionnaire at www.census.gc.ca by entering your secure access code included in your invitational letter.
If you would like to fill in a paper version, you may request one to be sent to your address.
In the 2021 Census, 25% of households will receive a Long Form questionnaire while other households will receive a Short Form questionnaire.
Please check your questionnaire to confirm which form you have received and refer to the corresponding information below where we have highlighted the questions relevant to Hong Kongers.
For Step D, remember to:
Question 9(a): fill in Cantonese if that is one of the languages spoken at home
Question 9(b): if you listed more than one language in question 9(a), remember to fill in Cantonese if that is the language that is used most often at home
Question 10: fill in Cantonese if that is your mother tongue
[Note: if you received a short form questionnaire, you will not be asked about your ethnic or cultural origin; those questions are only asked in the long form questionnaire]
For Step D, in the basic questions section remember to:

10: fill in Cantonese if that is your mother tongue.
For Step D, in the sociocultural questions section remember to:
19: fill in Hong Kong if that is where you were born;
20: fill in Hong Kong if that is where your parents were born;
21(b): select ‘Yes’ and specify Hong Kong if you hold a Hong Kong passport
22: fill in Cantonese if you can conduct a conversation in Cantonese
23: fill in Hong Konger to specify your ancestor’s ethnic or cultural origins; remember you can include more than one answer if you have ancestors of multiple origins (e.g. Chinese, Taiwanese, etc.)
25: fill in Hong Konger to specify your ethnicity; remember you can include more than one answer if you identify with other identities (e.g. Chinese, Taiwanese, etc.)
[Note: You can fill in "Hong Konger", "Hongkonger, "Hongkongese" etc. and Statistics Canada will still count these answers towards the same group]
