A census is an official count of a population that records various details about people. The Canada Census of Population is conducted by Statistics Canada once every 5 years.
The Census provides information on key socioeconomic trends and analysis that helps Canada make important policies and decisions that affect our everyday lives.
For example, it enables the government to estimate the demand for services in minority languages and to support planning, administration, policy development, and evaluation activities of governments at all levels.
It is also essential for maintaining Canada’s equitable representation, as they are used to set electoral boundaries.
Information from the census is also used by businesses, associations, community organizations and many others to make important decisions for your community, your province or territory, and the entire country.
In the 2021 Census, 25% of households will receive a Long Form questionnaire while other households will receive a Short Form questionnaire.
The Short Form questionnaire asks basic questions about the person including their age, gender, and languages spoken at home. The Long Form questionnaire asks the same basic questions plus additional questions including the person's place of birth and ethnic or cultural origins.
Please refer to the guide below on how to fill in the census questionnaire and the questions relevant to Hong Kongers.
