Awards instituted by IABMS
IABMS has instituted 19 awards and prizes under different categories. Those who would like to apply for the following awards must be an annual or life member of the association. All the papers must be accompanied by a duly filled in declaration form (Format is enclosed). The manuscripts for the prize papers should be in Microsoft format (Times new roman, font size 12) and submitted (soft and hard copies) to "The General Secretary IABMS, F - Block F - 199, 1st Street, Anna Nagar East, Chennai – 600 102 on or before 30th September 2024.
LIST OF AWARDS AND PRIZES - INSTITUTED BY IABMS*
M K NAMBIAR MEMORIAL ORATION AWARD - for an eminent scientist. This award is to be given to an outstanding scientist in Medical and Allied fields in a year and to a scientist of another faculty in the succeeding year. The Executive committee will select the awardee each year.
Dr. E. BALAKRISHNAN MEMORIAL AWARD - the best research paper in ophthalmology for scientists below the age of 45 Years.
Mrs. THANGAM VASUDEVAN AWARD - for the best research paper in any aspect of Biomedical Sciences, for Scientists below the age of 45 years.
INDRA VASUDEVAN AWARD - for the best research paper on Prevention/Cure or any other aspect of Cancer. If no paper is available on Cancer, it is left to the discretion of the Committee to give the award to any other good research paper. Upper age limit is 45 years.
SIRI RESEARCH AWARD - for the best paper on any aspect of Stress. Upper age limit for this prize is 45 years.
Dr. YELLAPRAGADA SUBBAROW MEMORIAL AWARD - for the best paper published in 'Biomedicine' during the previous one year. The selection will be made by the nominee of the Donor. Hence, no separate entry for this prize need to be submitted.
PROF N PADMANABHAN MEMORIAL AWARD - for the best paper in physiology comprising the work carried out in any departments of physiology by a postgraduate student of physiology.
THE PGIBMS AWARD - for the best oral-presentation of an original paper in any field of Biomedicine in the PGIBMS award session by a full time PG Student/Research scholar. The paper must be accompanied by a certificate from the Head of the Department to establish the bonafideness of the contestant. Papers submitted by regular teaching faculty of a department and those above the age of 35 years are not eligible for this award. No paper will be accepted for PGIBMS award session if submitted at the venue of the conference.
Dr. P S LALITHA AWARD - for the best research paper by a professional undergraduate, who may be an undergraduate of Veterinary or any other professional course excluding Medicine. The research paper must contain the student's original work and the student should be the first author. Review articles will not be considered for this award. In any year if there is many eligible candidates two of them will be selected for the award by a selection panel, appointed by the Executive Committee of IABMS.
Dr. LEELA KRISHNAMURTI MEMORIAL AWARD - for the best paper by any Medical undergraduate Papers submitted will be evaluated by a peer group for short-listing a minimum of three contestants for presentation at the Annual conference. The selected three candidates will be adjudged at the Annual Conference by a panel of Judges appointed from among the experts attending the Conference and two prizes will be awarded.
Dr. BRAMMAIAH SASTRI MEMORIAL AWARD - for Biomedical Scientists of Eminence with proven academic and research contribution with not less than 25 years of professional standing. Eligible persons are to be nominated by a life member of IABMS/Peer Academicians. Self- Nominations will not be entertained. The nominations are to be made on a plain paper with full address and designation of the proposer and the Nominee. The proposal should have the consent letter of the nominee and his/her full biodata and overall contribution made by him/her. The nominations will be scrutinized by the Executive Committee / Subcommittee and the final decision will be taken by the Executive Committee. The selected Scientist for this award will receive a Medal and a Scroll. If no nomination is received for in a particular year, the Executive Committee can itself spell out a suitable person for the award.
AGATHIYAR AWARD - The award will be given to the best research paper in any branch of Indigenous medicine such as Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha except homeopathy.
Dr. C R KRISHNAMURTHY MEMORIAL AWARD - This award is for a Biomedical scientist of eminence in the field of Environmental Toxicology/Environmental Biology with proven academic and research contribution and with not less than 25 years of professional standing. Eligible persons are to be nominated by a life member of IABMS/Peer academicians. Nomination should be accompanied by consent letter and the biodata of the nominee.
Mr. V V SWAMINATHAN DIAMOND JUBILEE RESEARCH ENDOWMENT AWARD - This Award will be given to an eminent scientist who has done an outstanding contribution in the scientific evaluation of medical properties of plants. The eligibility for the award will be a minimum period of 20 years of research-cum-teaching experience in the evaluation of medicinal plants for their therapeutic use. Eligible persons are to be nominated by two life members of IABMS/ academicians. Nomination should be accompanied by consent letter and biodata of the nominee.
Dr. A NAMASIVAYAM AWARD - This award is exclusively meant for mid-level scientist (above 40 years) for his/ her original work done in the respective speciality in Indian basic medical sciences. An expert committee formed by the donor department namely "Dept. of Physiology, PGIBMS will evaluate the received papers and the decision of the committee is final.
Dr. M S KRISHNAMOORTHY AWARD - The award will be given to a scientist (no limit in age) who has contributed original research output to develop a new research methodology in the discipline of Pharmacology and Environmental toxicology. An expert committee consisting of Pharmacologists and Toxicologists nominated by executive committee will select the awardee.
PROF SUNDARAM SUBRAMANIAM ORATION AWARD - The Award is exclusively meant for an eminent scientist above 50 years of age in any branch of Medical Sciences who is a life member of IABMS. A peer committee constituted by the executive committee of IABMS in consultation with the donor will select the awardee.
PROF. SP THYAGARAJAN-PROF S RAJARAJAN ENDOWMENT AWARD - For the outstanding patent registered or filed in the field of Biomedicine. A peer committee constituted by the executive committee of IABMS will select the awardee.
JAYA GROUP OF INSTITUTIONS AWARD - This award will be given to young researchers, not exceeding the age of 45, exclusively for the research paper submitted in the field of dentistry by the students perusing post -graduate degree in Dentistry (MDS) as well as dentists with MDS degree (Age proof must be attached with application).
Note: Awards No. 2, 3, 4 & 5 are based on original work conducted preferably in India and it should not have been published or considered for publication in any journal at the time of submitting it for IABMS awards.
Awards for Young Researchers
Awards for the best oral and poster presentations will be given to the young researchers as per IABMS guidelines. Few travel awards shall also be given to the deserving students and young faculty members as per IABMS guidelines.
Nominations for the title of FIABMS
Life members of IABMS are eligible for the award of the title of FIABMS. The process for application involves sending an application to the General Secretary, IABMS. The details on how to become a member of IABMS are available at https://iabms.org/membership/
