The workshop will be held in Ōdate City, Akita Prefecture, from 2 to 3 October 2026. It will be organized by the Asia-Pacific Regional Chapter of the International Association of Astacology (IAA-APRC) and co-hosted by Ōdate City.

The workshop aims to support the National Natural Monument Japanese Crayfish Habitat Restoration Project, which is funded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Akita Prefecture.

A welcome reception will be held on 2 October. On the morning of 3 October, IAA members will visit a Japanese crayfish habitat restoration site to observe the progress of the restoration project. The field visit will be followed by a poster session and roundtable discussion. In the afternoon, IAA members and other experts will deliver keynote lectures and technical presentations for the general public, followed by a general discussion.

The restoration project for the nationally designated Natural Monument “Japanese Crayfish Habitat” in Ōdate City has achieved several important outcomes, including the development and expansion of two restored habitats and the development and refinement of captive-breeding techniques for the Japanese crayfish (Cambaroides japonicus).

Future conservation efforts, however, will need to address emerging challenges, including the risk of invasive species entering the restored habitats and the long-term maintenance and management of suitable habitat conditions. 

This workshop will provide an opportunity to share relevant examples of invasive species management from Japan and other countries and to discuss the future direction of the Japanese Crayfish Habitat Restoration Project in Ōdate City.
