Renatus nearing the age of fourteen.
Strangely, after reincarnating, his personality had not become villainous like the evil chancellor but it also wasn’t like when he was a salaryman.
This was thanks to the lovely upbringing from his ‘father’ and older ‘brother’.
Thanks to them, Renatus had acted childish and more according to his age. Because of this overprotectiveness from when he was young, he had never even left his house. The house was large and gardens expansive, completely different from his previous life.
Nobles would have to enroll their children at Edelbard Royal Academy once they turned fourteen. Until then, he had been taught by a private tutor at home, but now he would be leaving and living in the school dormitories.
There technically was a junior academy for children aged seven to thirteen. Since this optional, many nobles had their children taught from home and those prep schools had become associated with commoners.
The modern worker in Renatus wanted to attend, but as a child of the Duke’s family, he could not bring himself to ask to attend.
Reflected in the mirror, Renatus looked elegant in his uniform. This was a result of steering clear of “the villain flags.” Well, could be effort or technically no effort…
The original villain was quite build, tall and muscular enough to go head-to-head with the protagonist. He was skilled with his sword and could do magic. That was the kind of cheat-level final boss he was.
Hehe. He definitely looked weak. If he trained, he would probably gain some muscle pretty quickly.
Renatus’s goal was to become a court magician.
Apparently, many magicians secluded themselves in their towers and chose to not get involved in politics. If he could avoid politics, all the bad flags would never appear. So, he had begged his ‘father’ to be in the magic department at the academy.
In the original novel, Renatus attended the knight school, where he clashed with the main character, Bradley Wolf. The two were constantly competing for the top spot, and led Renatus to harass Bradley. The villain had been a villain since their school days.
“Bradley still came out on top and graduated as number 1 regardless! So cool.”
Enrolling in a different department since meant I might be able to see the protagonist from a distance. He was looking forward to it. For fans, being able to see the protagonist would be something to drool over.
“Who’s cool?”
“Oh!”
Clarence had snuck up besides me.
“Big brother*, knock…”
“I did. I got worried when you didn’t answer. I was worried you collapsed again.”
Collapsing was not something some like Renatus, who was in perfect health, would do. He would often stay up nights reading magic books, the exhaustion leading to him sleeping in random places. The special skill he had from his previous life as a salaryman was being able to sleep soundly anywhere. His family believed that he was weak and would fall asleep often, not helped by his frail appearance.
“It’s okay. I apologize for worrying you so much.”
“Fufu, it’s alright. As your big brother*, it’s would be nice if you spoke more causally with me.”
[*Renatus uses a very formal/historical term to address Clarence, and Clarence refers to himself with a more neutral term, wanting him to use sweeter words with him. Basically the poor baby still doesn’t feel like family~]
Clarence gentled smiled at him, similar to that of his ‘father’. He had already graduated from the knight department, had a good physique, and was the heir to the dukedom.
“The uniform suits you well.”
“Thank you very much.”
“...Not taking off the mask, huh.”
Clarence’s fingers gently touched the mask. I had been told many times that it was okay to take off, but I couldn’t bring myself to.
“Yes, Isn’t it cool? I have polished this design.”
Renatus made sure to make his cheerful while showing off his mask.
The one his ‘father’ had prepared for him was a fluff mask made of lace. It was straight out of a Lolita fashion magazine.
The one he was wearing was dark and simple, brought about by the chuunibyou** inside of Renatus’s previous life.
The mask only covered his upper face, but his vision was not hindered, thanks to it’s status as a magic tool.
Anyway, every year there were a few students who entered wearing masks.
Among prestigious magic families, there were some with magic crests carved into their faces. Those children needed to conceal their crests, so they wore masks for most of their lives.
“...Yes. The mask suits you too.”
“Hehe. It even matches my uniform.”
While his voice remained cheerful, Clarence’s eyebrows drooped. He was worried that his previous outburst was the reason Renatus wouldn’t remove his mask. Thus, his older ‘brother’ had been concerned about Renatus’s emotional scars.
While one of the reasons unsaid was that “if my family shows their disgust, I could not recover,” but also that he “did not want to show his villainous face.”
Even so, when Clarence looked noticeable hurt at every rejection, it tugged at his heart. Even though this is more convenient, I keep making him guilty.
“...Do not take your mask off at school, Rena.”
Renatus was surprised, this was the first time he had been told to wear his mask.
Tilting his head he asked, “Big brother?”
“And, don’t get close to the knights. They only rough around.”
“Isn’t there a joint training exercise between the magic and knight department…”
“Oh, I guess. I am really worried about you, don’t listen to any strange people.”
Clarence’s concern was like a mother for her child. Renatus had his previous life’s memories, he knew knew not to follow anyone suspicious.
Why would he be worried about removing his mask? Maybe because his face was too creepy, so Clarence was worried about him getting bullied?
Even if he were dragged away to be bullied Renatus could handle it. He may look physically weak, but he was the final boss– with his cheat magic skills.
“Alright, I am not a kid anymore.”
“I know you’re not a kid anymore, but I’m still worried… if anything’s wrong please talk to me right away.” Clarence said, giving him a big hug.
It was warm, I felt like it would be nice to stay like this. But it was time to become independent, work hard, and repay the kindness of my foster family. I am eager to set out on this new adventure, and jump in the world of 'The Legend of the Wolf King Hero'. As a fan, Renatus was excited to be visiting the main story setting.
“Yes, I will do my best, big brother.”
Renatus made sure to emphasize his sincere emotions.
–
During lunch, four month after starting school.
Renatus was heading towards his favorite rose garden: beautiful roses, lovely scent, shade from the gazebo, and it was free of people.
For being so pristine and well-maintained, it was strange that there were never people around. Reading there is how Renatus spent most of his days.
“Huh…”
Coming up to the garden, there was a half-naked man diligently washing his shirt at the water fountain. Turned way, I noticed his tanned and muscular back. Based off of his build, he most likely was from the knight department.
He looked like he was doing laundry.
However, the dorms had daily laundry collected. I didn’t wash my clothes myself, and with the way he was washing, it looked like he didn’t either. He was close to damaging the fabric.
Maybe I should help him…
Renatus decided to try calling out, since he could use magic to get rid of any stains from the clothes.
“What happened?”
The man turned around in response. His black hair was cut in a wild wolf style, underneath lay sharp, sharp black eyes. The most handsome man I had only seen in 2D was suddenly brought to life before me.
Renatus trembled in shock, as if hit by Truck-kun.
