The activation of FOXM1 during the cell cycle is mediated by changes in its homodimerization states
In the early G1 phase, FOXM1 proteins initially undergo repression due to the αβα-ββαβ interaction. Their dimerization occurs through the NRD-TAD proximity. However, the introduction of PLK1 phosphorylation on αβα disrupts this interaction, thereby diminishing autorepressed dimerization as cells progress from the S phase through the G2/M phase. Subsequently, the PLK1-phosphorylated αβα shows a preference for interaction with IDR, facilitating an alternative dimerization of FOXM1 proteins through αβα-IDR proximity.
