BIOGRAPHY
  Hyosung An is a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Hanyang University. He received his B.S. summa cum laude and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Hanyang University under the guidance of Professor Jong-Man Kim. He was a Kwanjeong Educational Foundation Fellow while pursuing his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University under the mentorship of Professor Jodie L. Lutkenhaus. His doctoral research centered on multifunctional polymeric and composite materials, focusing on novel conductive polymer binder systems for lithium-ion batteries and flexible conductive composites for strain and health-monitoring sensors. His doctoral work earned him the KANEKA Scholarship Award and selection as a BASF Symposium Oral Presentation Finalist.


During his postdoctoral training with Professor Qian Chen at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he developed an advanced 3D imaging and analysis framework combining transmission electron tomography, machine learning, and quantitative morphometry. With this platform, he elucidated a direct quantitative relationship between synthesis conditions and separation performance in highly heterogeneous polyamide membranes—a challenge previously deemed unattainable due to their nanoscale structural irregularity. In recognition of these achievements, he was selected as an ACS PMSE Future Faculty Scholar.


Prior to joining Hanyang University, he served on the faculty in the Department of Petrochemical Materials Engineering at Chonnam National University, where his research group focused on liquid-phase atomic force microscopy (AFM), 3D electron tomography, and TEM image simulations for polymers and soft matter systems. Beyond research, he maintains an active commitment to outreach, mentorship, and fostering inclusive scientific environments. Outside the laboratory, he enjoys cooking and cheering for Texas A&M Aggies football.
