Since the city was founded almost 1,000 years ago, the Guelphs and the Hanseatic League have shaped Braunschweig. Today, the Lion City with around 250,000 inhabitants is an attractive shopping and lively cultural city and the center of Europe's most research-intensive region. The Middle Ages can be experienced here in the winding alleyways of the Magni quarter with its small half-timbered houses or on the Burgplatz square with its historic buildings, as well as the urban lifestyle in the vibrant shopping city. Everything that makes a big city is just a short walk away - as are the wonderful parks and natural landscapes that provide peace and quiet along the River Oker on the edge of the city center.
