Hi! My name is Morgan Swanberg and that is me standing on the left! This was at my first period kit assembly event as a volunteer and the event was lead by Joyce who is to my right! She helps facilitate the creation of thousands of period kits every month! Behind us are about 400 period kits that were assembled just in one day.
I have been working with Free Flow New Mexico since Septermber 2025 as an intern for a UNM class project. I have been specifically working on the social media management side of things. I am working to get my bachelors at UNM in Community Health Education and I have been grateful to have been paired with such a great non-profit organization. I have been working to help reduce stigma on periods, encourage people to stay active while on their periods, as well as poromote the Reusable Period Product Program avaliable to anyone in New Mexico.
It's such a great resource and a great way to reduce monthly waste. Also because you don't have to constantly buy products all the time you can save money every month. I have learned a lot about period poverty and overall hygine poverty because of Free Flow New Mexico. Laurie Merill the founder has helped me learn about several different resources within teh community that work to support community members.
Free Flow New Mexico, founded by Laurie Merrill on the right, Free Flow New Mexico is a 501(C)(3) non-profit with the aspiration to reduce period poverty in New Mexico. There are several programs, and you can check out the link to their website here.
I have learned that there is a lot of stigma about periods since starting this feild experience. A lot of people don't even realize that there are other options to manage your period flow. Many people just don't talk about it. It has been cool to bring up more conversations about what I am doing because I can educate those around me.
