"Emerald Necklace" proposed by Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett in Plan of Chicago (1909)
(Map: Chicago History Museum)
The Emerald Necklace links parks and boulevards as a green network, while fountains and statues were designed to adorn boulevards, creating "continuous playgrounds." We re-envision parks and boulevards in Chicago that are substantially broken and underutilized, particularly in low-income communities of South and West Side of the city.
Boulevard can be reprogrammed as a shared space for parking, social and cultural programs, and bike station, etc., where stormwater runoff can be collected and retreated through bioswale and rain garden.
