Reconnecting broken neighborhoods
: The transit station at IIT is monofunctional, lacking connections to place or programs that engage flows of people passing in and out of the neighborhoods of Bronzeville and Bridgeport.
Urban hybrids
: Currently, the area lacks daily life and cultural amenities that could support the two neighborhoods as well as the IIT campus.
The hybrid of programs in a station complex will support the needs and connect the two neighborhoods divided from the Street Street.
Transformation of the platform
: Currently, a platform at the 35th Bronzeville-IIT station is narrowly placed between the two train tracks. As transformed into a two-sided platform, the station area can be more flexibly designed with expanded public space connected to the platform.
The new train platform becomes a roof of the building as a transit station mall. This will create a rich mixture of programs and amenities to be shared by both audiences.
Social Condenser takes a CTA train station as opportunity for growth. It will provide common place IIT and Bronzeville neighbors can socially mix while waiting for or taking the train.
With providing social, commercial, cultural and sports programs, this complex will create a new vibrant urban scenario by utilizing CTA train, an existing infrastructure.
