QR based moile card issuance
Domain: Fintech · Remittance · Mobile Payment
Role: Product Manager
Year: 2022
Platform: Native Mobile App with WebView
Problem & Goal
Problem
Limited Access to Local Payment Methods
Users traveling to China had limited access to UnionPay-based QR payments without a locally supported payment method, creating friction in everyday offline payments.
Fragmented Card Issuance Journey
Mobile card issuance and payment activation were handled through disconnected processes, increasing user effort and the risk of drop-off before card activation.
Complex Identity & Compliance Requirements
The product needed to meet identity verification, security, and cross-border payment requirements while keeping the onboarding experience simple for users.
Goal
Build a seamless in-app journey from application to UnionPay mobile card issuance and QR payment, allowing users to complete the entire process without leaving the Hanpass app.
* Simplified for portfolio: internal API calls and detailed edge cases are omitted.
Solution & Product Architecture
Built an End-to-End In-App Card Journey
01. Simplified Application
Reused existing customer information and minimized additional data entry required for mobile card application.
02. Identity Verification & Eligibility Check
Integrated identity verification and required eligibility checks into the card issuance journey while meeting UnionPay and cross-border payment requirements.
03. Instant Mobile Card Issuance
Enabled users to receive and activate their UnionPay mobile card directly within the app after successful verification.
04. QR Payment Experience
Connected card issuance with the QR payment journey, enabling users to move seamlessly from onboarding to payment within the same product experience.
Key Execution
Defined the end-to-end user journey from application and verification to card issuance, QR payment, and exception handling.
Simplified a complex multi-party card issuance process into a 5-step user journey, reducing unnecessary user touchpoints.
Translated UnionPay API specifications and business requirements into product flows, functional requirements, and system behavior.
Defined exception flows and error handling across identity verification, card issuance, and payment scenarios.
Worked across internal product, design, and engineering teams and the external UnionPay business team to align business rules, technical constraints, and customer experience.
Impact
Created an End-to-End In-App Payment Experience
Enabled users to complete the journey from mobile card application to issuance and QR payment without leaving the Hanpass app.
Reduced Friction in Card Issuance
Consolidated fragmented application, verification, and issuance processes into a single mobile journey, lowering the number of user touchpoints required before payment.
Expanded Cross-Border Payment Accessibility
Enabled Hanpass users to use UnionPay QR payments across supported markets, including mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau, extending the product beyond remittance into everyday payment use cases.
Built a Scalable Integration with an External Payment Network
Structured UnionPay APIs, business rules, and exception scenarios into reusable product and system flows, creating a more reliable foundation for card issuance and payment operations.
Key Takeaway
Integrating a global payment network is not simply an API integration problem. The key product challenge is to translate complex compliance rules, partner APIs, and exception scenarios into a simple and intuitive customer journey.
This project reinforced the importance of designing for both the happy path and edge cases when building regulated payment products across multiple systems and external partners.
