Hurricane Ida was a Category 4 hurricane that made landfall in coastal Louisiana in late August 2021. The storm at one point made landfall in Pointe-au-Chien, Louisiana and brought with it 150 mph winds and flood water which has caused widespread damage to the bayou communities of Terrebonne Parish and LaFourche Parish.

Indigenous people have called the gulf coast home since time immemorial. The Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe, Isle de Jean Charles Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Tribe, the Grand Caillou/Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw, and the Bayou Lafourche Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw are all state recognized Tribes and all call the gulf and its bayous "home." These Tribes, all members of the Louisiana Costal Tribes Coalition, are currently at the forefront of Ida's devastation. The Tribes and their members have lost homes, power, running water, and equipment for their work.
