Context
Classes at The Hungarian Language School Inc. range from the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (AUSVELS) Level 1 to 6 and the school is recognised as a VCE LOTE provider. Classes are held on Saturday from 9.30 to 12.15 for students up to Level 6 and from 9.30 to 12.30 for VCE. The Hungarian Language School is a coeducational language school with an enrolment of about 30 – 60 students.
The Hungarian Language School welcomes students from all over Melbourne. Most of the school’s students enrol at the beginning of the year but new students are welcome to enrol at any time during the whole school year.
Students are taught in Hungarian and learn speaking, listening, reading and writing in the Hungarian language. In learning Hungarian, students develop communication skills and knowledge and come to understand social, historical, familial relationships and other aspects of the specific language and culture of the speakers of the language they are studying. Students have opportunities to develop their skills in school concerts, functions and literary competitions.
The Hungarian Language School has small class sizes to cater for the individual needs of each student. Students are placed in classes according to their age and Hungarian proficiency. Both primary and secondary classes learn Hungarian through various themes, topics and issues. A partnership exists between the students, parents and teachers to provide firm discipline.
The Hungarian Language School Inc. also provides classes for adults interested in learning Hungarian. These classes are held at the Hungarian Community Centre on Saturday mornings.
