Teaching Philosophy

Teaching and learning is always a part of my life. My philosophy for teaching is shaped by my experience as a student, a teaching assistant, and a mentor to graduate students. My experience reminds me to set high expectations and goals, be well prepared, and teaching is a form of learning.

Set high expectations and goals: High expectations and goals are key drivers that shape my habit to perform the best of ability to learn when I was a student. I will take the same teaching approach and set high expectations on my students to try their hardest and strive for improvement on a daily basis. I will ask my students to set their own goals and take steps toward achieving their goals every day.
Be well prepared: Content-driven and lectured-based teaching methods are able to clearly communicate the hard parts in engineering education. I will take advantage of this type of organized and well-prepared lectures to help students to learn. At the same time, I will also combine actively learning and peer-to-peer learning that require students to be well prepared before class to get involved.
Teaching is a form of learning: Each student brings a unique background and perspective. Teaching and communicating with students is also a process of learning to gain inspiration for my teaching and research. I will also encourage my students to take on the role of a teacher to present to teach their peers in order to enhance their learning experience through teaching.
