This site provides examples of instructional resources created in the Humanizing Online STEM Academy, a professional development program funded by the California Education Learning Lab and administered by the Foothill DeAnza Community College District.
Before I took this course, I felt as though I was an effective and equitable educator. I knew I had room to grow and educational tools to incorporate into the online classroom. This program has made me realize that I was not as far along as I would like to be! There are a lot of things that I have done and are currently doing correctly, but there is so much room for me to grow. I knew I had room to grow, but I did not know anything about making a webpage, liquid syllabus, or mini videos! I am so happy that I have gotten to learn these throughout the past six weeks and I have found so much value in these tools! I have learned what it is to be a student, a clear communicator, and have very clear written expectations!
Where I am.
This course helped me acquire a more technologically-sophisticated skill set in online lecture presentation. I now appreciate the value in spending time creating higher quality humanizing videos to demonstrate instructor personality, approachability, and flexibility. Microlectures support busy student schedules in providing flexibility in scheduling learning tasks, and help with creating an appropriate balance between high context and low context classroom cultures.
Where I am going.
I will continue to grow the technological and pedagogical skill sets acquired during this course, with focus on supporting students wherever they may be on their academic journeys. The recognition of complex issues such as imposter syndrome and ongoing microaggressions will be foremost in mind.

I will use this to build trust from the beginning of the course. Have a liquid syllabus can help ease students anxiety about the course they might be experiencing. Have a warm, welcoming, environment will lay the foundation of trust, which will empower students for the very beginning!
The course card for my Canvas site represent a combination of diversity and positive energy to build a community and support for my class.
My homepage is fun, colorful, and inviting. I do this intentionally because it is important to me that students start the term off in a warm and inviting way! I want students to have a good experience with math, so I think that building trust and having an easy to navigate homepage can lay the foundation. I think students appreciate clear and concise information.
I will use this information to reach out to students early if I feel that they are falling behind. Having an understand about the lives of my students will help me build proper assignments and work with students who need the extra support. This survey will students help start off the class on the right foot by feeling heard and valued.
This was my first time experiencing doing an ice breaker using Flip. I was very worried and had a lot of anxiety having to use video. I found FlipGrid to be very easy to use, and was actually fun! I looked forward to hearing the other peers in the humanizing online STEM workshop. I feel as though I got to know them on a different level than had we not had video. I now feel comfortable incorporating this into my class, and I think the students will find a lot of value in these exercises once they get comfortable doing them!
Making a bumper video was fun to do! I have never made a video outside my lecture video's, but I found a lot of value in this. I think it is helpful for students who may be confused on a concept. I chose to do a video on a simple project that can be confusing for students following the steps in the project. I think that if students see a quick demo, they can follow the project and steps with confidence and have fun with it!
Correctly assigning absolute configuration is one of the student learning outcomes for Multivariable Calculus. This can be a difficult topic for students, because it is a combination of previous calculus topics! I was happy to make this video and will definitely be making more microlectures in the future!
