HUG with Maths is a maths project combining the improvement of mathematical skills with the development of the communication and empathy skills of pupils. HUG stands for "Having Unprejudiced Generations" by which we emphasize our goal of raising a generation free from prejudices against different cultures, beliefs, nationalities, religions, races, genders and so on which is a world-wide problem, unfortunately.
Maths is considered as the most difficult subject ever and shattering a settled belief is more difficult than constructing a brand-new one. We aim at the harder by bringing a new approach to maths teaching and learning together with our students. Because we know that, the more involved you are, the more you care about and enjoy something. We will value any suggestions from our students which will restore their self-esteem and will make them feel themselves involved in this project. As a result they will adopt our project, contribute to it, enjoy it and want to learn maths. For short, they will overcome their anxiety of Maths.
What's more is that, they will cooperate with their peers especially with the ones whom they despise most. Giving a chance to each other in terms of knowing each other will push them to think about their attitudes towards each other and to empathize. We chose this topic because being a small village school with residents from east and west parts of the country, there is a sharp contrast between these two groups which we do not want to pass to the next generations.
Besides, pupils can be cruel to their peers with diffent physical appearances, socio-economic conditons or special needs. It is harder to smash prejudice than smash an atom. We aim the former. Not only our schools and school staff but also all our partners' , all of whom will bring unique experiences and good practices to our project, and our neighbour schools and communities will benefit from this project. 14-15 year old pupils will involve actively on each stage as we will adopt a student-oriented methodology in carrying out our project. Disadvantaged groups will be given priority in the implementation to make them feel useful and accepted.
We will relate maths with diffrent tasks within life like art, cooking, history etc which will develop an understanding of the relation between maths and everyday life. Our students will use maths skills in real life. Convincing them to the usefulness of maths in everyday life give them a valid reason for wanting to learn maths in adition to the fun they will have through the learning process.
As a result, students will improve their mathematical,ICT and language skills as well as their empathy skills and tolerance for differency.
Teachers will develop new approaches in teaching maths to their students in a more involving, attractive, interesting, enjoyable and hands-on way in addition to improving their language and ICT skills. We will adopt a cross-curricular approach so all branches of teaches will act in cooperation to achieve this goal.
Parents will witness the desirable change in their children both in terms of academic success and emotional development.
Our project will gain our students the skills of mutual understanding, tolerance, self-esteem and self-awareness to become the self-efficient individuals of tomorrow. Because Maths is not only about calculating but also about critical thinking and perception of life.
And we; Belgium, Turkey, Romania, Macedonia, Italy and Spain will hug with Maths.
