Client empowering talking therapy to support people who are struggling.
After spending the past six years as a counsellor in the charity sector I have worked in a variety of organisations offering emotional support to people who are suffering with a wide range of issues from addiction, bereavement, sexual trauma, anxiety and depression. However, I recognise that human suffering is often complex and do not believe that peoples pain can be easily labelled. In my work I have supported adults, teenagers and children who come to the counselling room in attempt to "just feel better" its important to me to treat each person as unique and support them to find the answers that are right for their individual experience. Helping a client to better understand themselves will allow them to develop tools to continue the healing work outside of the counselling room.
At the Huddersfield Counselling Hub we are trauma informed and use psychoeducation (educating about the psychological and emotional affects) and grounding techniques to help people work through painful memories with the aim to start the journey of emotional healing.
I am experienced and passionate in working with women's issues, whether this be relating to motherhood and fertility, peri menopause and menopause or with survivors of sexual abuse. The world can often be a difficult and scary place for women and girls and I work from a feminist perspective helping to build self esteem and happiness.
Currently I am providing counselling to women who are navigating the often difficult transition into motherhood, after experiencing perinatal OCD I have spent the past three years learning about the intense and sometimes destabilising changes that happen to women whilst pregnant and in the postpartum period. I use my knowledge of the neurological changes but also bring awareness of the systemic and political climate that often leaves women overly responsible and isolated in what can be an extremely hard stage of life.
My training is both person centred and psychotherapeutic, meaning I will work with what is happening for you in the moment whilst gently exploring connections this may have to the past. Through exploring childhood experiences related to attachment it can often be uncovered how these events are impacting clients in the here and now. I am trained and experienced in attachment theory and find that this often manifests in my work with clients both in their inner world and their relationships with others. Counselling sessions provide an opportunity to form a secure and safe bond with another skilled listener which allow space for relational issues arise and be worked through responsibly.
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and have DBS checked and insured. I have had in depth safeguarding training and undertake regular CPD to keep my knowledge up to date.
