In January of 2020, HUCTM's entry in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) song contest, “The Math Git Up,” ranked 5th in the nation. With inspiration from the well-known song "The Git Up" by Blanco Brown, we created the dance for students to learn more about mathematics. Incorporating dance with mathematics allows children to engage their minds and bodies while expressing their thinking through movement. Check out our nationally ranked Math Camp dance below.
In addition to learning the group dance, "The Math Git Up", children create personalized dances based on their family's mathematician. Starting the day with dancing allows campers to become increasingly more comfortable and get energized. They begin with reading a brief biography of their family's mathematician, then work with their families to create a dance to represent the impact their mathematician made. Children perform dances throughout the day so campers can learn about each other's mathematicians. See some outstanding examples below.
