Children enter Math Camp through a cheering tunnel of Heidelberg University teacher candidates. They are immediately introduced to their Math Camp families. The families are intentionally named after famous mathematicians, showcasing the diverse history of individuals who have highly impacted the subject. Children get a glimpse of the societal inequities they endured, as these scholars influenced the ever-growing research in mathematics. While learning that everyone is born a mathematician, families read about the math and history of their respective mathematician. They work together to create a dance to showcase their mathematical accomplishments and formulate a symbolic chant. Children leave Math Camp having a deep understanding of not only their family's mathematician, but also others as they watch and listen to everyone's dance and chant.
These biographies are a great way for children to learn about those who have impacted the world of mathematics. They allow children to see that they too are mathematicians and can make an impact on the world. The Math Camp team invites you to use this as a resource for educational purposes at home, in the classroom, or day-to-day life.
